		<description>

Russia’s war on Ukraine has not only destroyed millions of human lives, it has also been catastrophic for the environment. Forests and fields have been burned to the ground, animal and plant species pushed to the brink of extinction, soil and water contaminated with oil products, debris, and mines.&#38;nbsp; On a single day in June 2023, the breached Kakhovka Dam flooded thousands of kilometres of protected natural habitat, as well as villages, towns, and agricultural land. The devastation of biodiversity and ecosystems across Ukraine has been immeasurable, long-lasting and its consequences stretch beyond national borders. In this poignant book, Ukrainian researcher Darya Tsymbalyuk offers an intimate portrait of her beloved homeland against the backdrop of Russia’s war and ecocide. In elegant and moving prose, she describes the damage to the&#38;nbsp;country’s&#38;nbsp;rivers,&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;grasslands of the steppes,&#38;nbsp;animals, insects, and&#38;nbsp;colonies of birds, as a result of Russia’s ground and air operations.&#38;nbsp; Alongside the everyday experiences of people in Ukraine living with the environmental consequences of the war, we share Tsymbalyuk’s own reckoning with the changing nature of&#38;nbsp;cherished&#38;nbsp;places and the loss of familiar worlds caused by the ongoing Russian invasion.

		<description>botanical documentation of existence
video essay, 2023&#38;nbsp;

Mum and I have always
been close. This video essay builds on our conversations and mum’s photos of
Kyiv she was sharing with me in WhatsApp after Russia’s full-scale invasion of
Ukraine. The war cuts deep into the everyday realities, into our most intimate relations,
disfigures the familiar. Against this violence, my mother holds on to life and
stays attuned to its diverse forms, and I stay attuned to her.
The essay was made part of the art residency “Bodies as Lands — Sociotechnical Imaginaries and Spatial Arrangements in Eastern Europe”, Nida Art Colony, Lithuania, curated by&#38;nbsp;Asia Bazdyrieva and Egija Inzule.&#38;nbsp;
It has been shown at Filma Feminist Film Festival,&#38;nbsp;Württembergischer Kunstverein (Stuttgart, Germany), Kyiv Biennial (Vienna, Austria),&#38;nbsp;Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture (Dnipro, Ukraine), and Österängens Konsthall (Jönköping, Sweden)  &#38;nbsp;

		<description>i dream of seeing the steppe again&#38;nbsp;

This workshop was developed in collaboration with Serhii Lymanskyi to raise funds for Serhii in the moment of need. &#38;nbsp;The workshop shares vegetal stories of Kreidova Flora/Chalk flora, a nature reserve in Donetsk oblast, which is home to many endangered and endemic species. Based on the photo archive of Serhii, a director of the reserve, who have preserved and documented this unique place for years, Darya invites everyone to learn about different species and draw a plant on a shared piece of paper, hoping to collectively imagine the steppe in bloom. Kreidova Flora/Chalk Flora has been at the epicentre of fighting for years, and Serhii’s home was totally destroyed. As part of the workshop, we kindly ask you to consider donating to Serhii, if you can, his PayPal is&#38;nbsp;hranytelgor@gmail.com.
The workshop was conducted at
Ivana Kupala festival, Phytology/Bethnal Green Nature Reserve, London, UK, curated by Olha Pryymak,&#38;nbsp;Dana Olărescu, and&#38;nbsp;Lika Tarkhan-Mouravi.&#38;nbsp;

Darya Tsymbalyuk&#38;nbsp;

My name is Darya Tsymbalyuk. I am in Scotland, but my family and friends are in Ukraine. My mom is in the metro station in Kyiv, sheltering and my father is defending the sity in a volunteer battalion. I am trying to collect money to pass on to my friends on the ground who are purchasing and bringing aid, bullet proof vests and medicine to the people in Ukraine.
These drawings were made by me for an animation film (still in progress) ‘Displaced Garden’ which tells stories of war and displacement from Donbas, Ukraine. Some of these drawings are portraits of plants who were displaced when the war started in 2014.
 The drawings are made in coloured pencils, format A5. The painting is A5, oil on canvas.
I will be selling them, starting from £350 (sliding scale).

email: darya.tsymbalyuk@gmail.com&#38;nbsp;

At the moment I also have covid (worst timing!), so can’t leave the house, and given the demand for help in many places, I won’t be able to ship the drawing to you immediately, but I will do that, I guarantee that.

Iryna Zamuruieva

My name is Iryna Zamuruieva, I’m based in Scotland now but originally come from Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine. A lot of my friends have fled their cities, a lot of them stayed and are defending, taking care of one another, resisting Russian invasion.

These photography based prints are part of my vital composers series. They go back to Uath Lochans in the North of Scotland, where I started making these images.&#38;nbsp; I am very much into wondering what a more care-ful relationship between ourselves and other creatures looks &#38;amp; feels like (spoiler: from where I’m now it surely isn’t one where my home country is invaded and bombed by Russia). This work is a meditation on that theme. It’s also about encountering the seemingly familiar in all its weirdness and joy.

Medium: photography based prints and collage, printed on 300gsm fine art paper in matte
email:&#38;nbsp;zamuruieva@gmail.com

“Darya Tsymbalyuk’s is a powerful voice that speaks not only on behalf of millions of Ukrainians whose life was turned upside down by the Russian aggression against their homeland but also on behalf of the nature that has been destroyed by the war. A personal and powerful testimony on the destruction that still goes on.”
Serhii Plokhy, author of Chernobyl Roulette: A War Story“Timely, necessary, galvanizing, enraging.”Philippe Sands, UCL“A gripping lament over the destruction that Russia has sowed into every nook of Ukraine’s natural environment. A must-read!”Maria Popova, McGill University“A supremely important book, in which all Ukrainians will recognize their disappearing landscape and the resilience of communities surviving the immense devastation and terror. Many have tried to write such a book, but only Tsymbalyuk has succeeded.”Svitlana Matviyenko, Simon Fraser University
“A moving and beautifully written account of a country and its nature enduring war. At once analytical and deeply personal, it offers a unique window on to what is happening to the environment, society and culture in Ukraine”.Emma Hakala, Finnish Institute of International Affairs“Deeply personal and grounded in evidence, Tsymbalyuk's book is an elegy for what is lost in Ukraine to the violence of war. It documents the destruction of human and natural systems and provides insight into potential long-term consequences of military conflict.”Lisa Brady, Boise State University
"Part memoir, part academic study, Ecocide in Ukraine is a marvellous and moving account of the massive destruction caused to the natural world by Russia's war. Darya Tsymbalyuk describes what has been lost. Fighting has wrecked the habits of unique flora and fauna, from rare mice to endangered flowers. An important and original account."Luke Harding, author of Invasion: Russia's Bloody War and Ukraine's Fight for Survival, shortlisted for the Orwell Prize and Peterson Literary Prize
